 OBESITY

 IS A

 MAJOR HEALTH PROBLEM

AMONG LONG HAUL TRUCK  DRIVERS AND REQUIRES

 IMMEDIATE ACTION

Why long haul truck drivers specifically?

Long haul truck drivers venture more than 100 miles from home and often spend weeks at a time traveling over the road to transport cargo, freight, and other goods from points of manufacture or import to various destinations across the United States. It would be difficult to name a business that could function without the trucking industry, specifically the services of long haul truck drivers who are dedicated and committed to traveling the distance. Trucking is a growing industry that has a tremendous economic impact on the nation.

However, driving for long hours yields a sedentary working environment for drivers. It increases their chances of becoming obese and developing other health problems. Lack of healthy food choices, lack of physical activity, and poor quality of sleep are just some of the contributing factors of poor health that long haul truck drivers are subjected to in order to work in this profession and keep our nation growing and thriving.

The Long Haul Truck Driver Health Association of America (LHTDH) is a nonprofit organization with a mission of improving health and health-related outcomes of long haul truck drivers in America. Actions geared toward accomplishing this mission include population research, providing education about disease risks factors associated with poor health outcomes, encouraging positive lifestyle changes and empowering this population to make those changes, and implementing health promotion strategies.

THE HARD TRUTH:
Long haul truck drivers suffer poorer health outcomes.

Almost 70% of long haul truck drivers are obese

About 40% of adults in the US are obese

Physical activity has a major impact on obesity among long haul truck drivers.
